Everything You Didn’t Know You Needed to Know About Almond Flour

All-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, oat flour, coconut flour, almond flour, with all these different options it’s hard to know what flour is the best option. So, here’s everything you didn’t know you needed to know about almond flour.

Almonds

What is Almond Flour?

You’ll never guess, it’s flour made from finely ground up almonds!

How is it Made?

Although the first part was pretty self explanatory, the process of making the almond flour isn’t as simple. The process begins by blanching the almonds in boiling water in order to simplify the next step which is the removal of the almond skins. The next step involves grinding and sifting the almonds until they have all transformed into a fine powder.

Why is it Healthier Than Other Flours?

There are three main reasons why almond flour is often considered healthier for you than many of its alternatives. These reasons include: Being gluten-free, almond flour is a friend to your blood sugar, and it is wonderfully nutritious!

Gluten-free: Here at Emmy’s Organics, we pride ourselves in bringing our customers like you a delicious gluten-free snacking option. This is why almond flour was an obvious choice! Many people’s bodies recognize gluten as being harmful, resulting in undesirable effects such as bloating, diarrhea (sorry, we had to say it), weight loss, skin rashes and tiredness. So, almond flour provides a safe and extremely healthy alternative!

Blood Sugar’s Buddy: Refined wheat (aka the stuff that makes up most all-purpose flour) is very high in carbs and low in fat and sugar. This often results in high spikes in blood sugar levels, followed by rapid drops, which can leave you tired, hungry and craving foods high in sugar and calories. But lucky for us, this is not the case for almond flour! In fact, almond flour is low in carbs and high in fat and sugars giving it a low glycemic index, which basically means it slowly diffuses the sugar into your bloodstream to keep you energized longer! And who would say “no” to more energy? Asking for a friend.

Did Someone Say, “Unbelievably Nutritious?”: Here’s just a quick run-down of how much nutrients is in just one teensy ounce of almond flour:

  • Calories: 163
  • Fat: 14.2 grams (9 of which are monounsaturated)
  • Protein: 6.1 grams
  • Carbs: 5.6 grams
  • Dietary fiber: 3 grams
  • Vitamin E: 35% of the RDI*
  • Manganese: 31% of the RDI
  • Magnesium: 19% of the RDI
  • Copper 16% of the RDI
  • Phosphorus 13% of the RDI

(* RDI = Recommended Dietary Intake)

With almond flour being particularly rich in Vitamin E, these fat soluble compounds act as antioxidants for the body and can prevent damage from harmful molecules called free radicals, which accelerate aging and increase your risk of heart disease and cancer! Can you even believe it? Those little almonds sure pack a mighty punch!

With all of that information brought to light, we don’t think we’ll ever go back to using any other flours! If you're eager to get started, check out some delicious gluten-free recipes on our blog or read up more about almond flour from this article.
