Transitioning back into the academic school year can be a stressful time! Be sure to get ahead of potential sickness by taking care of yourself and boosting your immune system. One of our Campus Brand Ambassadors, Emily Morgan, shares her tips for staying healthy throughout the semester.

This fall is my first semester at college, and boy, have I realized how much sickness travels around campus! I’ve been sick a lot in the past month, so I’m sharing the tips I’ve learned to avoid future sickness:
Cough drops!-- I keep a handful of them in my backpack at all times! I suck on them throughout the day when I have a cold or my throat is sore. My mom and I really do swear by cough drops to help keep a sore throat from getting worse.
Warm salt water rinse-- After a visit to my college’s health clinic, the nurse suggested I do warm salt water rinses to reduce the bacteria in my mouth. Simply mix one teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm/hot water gargle with a mouthful of the mixture for 25 seconds. Spit the mixture out, repeating until all of the salt water is gone.
Sleep- The past six weeks I’ve realized that sleep is the number one most important factor to keep me feeling my best. Sleeping well also helps me avoid sickness. In college, it’s extremely difficult to get an adequate amount of sleep. We have long days followed by homework-- I GET it. However, by going to bed earlier I can get enough sleep and also wake up earlier. I use the morning hours to be productive. With that extra time I can check things off my to-do list!
Vitamin D- Since being at school, I’ve missed being able to just sit outside and enjoy the outdoors and sunshine before winter arrives. I finally took some time to sit outside for the first time while being at school and it was so rejuvenating. Take 20 minutes to enjoy the nice weather and rest.
Nutritious snacking- Sleep is important when sick, and so is fueling your body with real whole foods to avoid inflammation. Eating well gives your body its best ability to get better. I love snacking on fruit, especially pineapple and watermelon when I’m sick to keep me feel hydrated. I can’t forget Emmy’s Organics too! One of my favorite sweet snacks made with REAL, simple ingredients, Emmy’s keeps me going even when I’m under the weather. I'm all about throwing a couple Peanut Butter Coconut Cookies in my bag when I'm on-the-go.
I hope you all are able to stay healthy this fall and winter season! For more college talk, easy recipes, and day-to-day life hacks, join me over on Instagram at @cooking_emily!
